Editing the final project

In the editing process, I had really fun editing the pieces together, using everything I had learnt from previous sessions made it very easy and I could work well without needing assistance from the help from class activities. I really like my nightmare one I think it captivates the piece really well and is intriguing and different.

Interview

I interviewed my friend Chloe Apter a student at the University of Sussex studying English. She was a perfect candidate, she gave some great and engaging answers that worked well with the theme of the interview brief. She was great to work with and did actually give me more footage than I needed so it was cut down to fit the project.

Jack Foley

I have always had an interest in Jack Foley due to my brother getting at first at university in the niche area of foley sound, so I have know about him for a long time. I really wanted to incorporate this into my work. Therefore,  I did some research around him, luckily there had already been a class presentation so I was able to use some of the information from that too. As this progressed I decided to great my soundscape using items and objects around my room to create this sense of nightmare; by banging doors, scratching walls, using shoes, using spray cans etc. This was really fun and interesting because I got to experience a different type of sound and try something new.

Soundscape; What I want to create

I firstly looked at creating a sound scape of the Brighton beach and the surrounding areas specifically looking at the liveliness of the sea and the sounds it can create. After some time I decided that this was very generic and done before so I invested looking into something else. I thought about the sounds the brain make its self and its ability to captivate someone in their sleep through a nightmare. Therefore, I looked into creating sounds using my bedroom and a foley take on things.

Interview; What I want to create

My first decisions was to create an interview from my friend Chloe who has two tattoos from Brighton by two different artists I would ask her;

  • where she got them?
  • what made her come to Brighton specifically?
  • why people get tattoos?
  • why there is still today people against tattoos?
I thought this would be a good topic to look at as Brighton is a large scenic area for tattoos and many people travel to Brighton directly to get tattoos from an artist cause it's so well known here. She is also very articulate and her parents do not particularly like tattoos so she is able to give an opinion of someone who doesn't like her own tattoos.

Project Brief

This project is divided in to two sections, the first will support your understanding of digital audio recording and editing in the production of a sound library and soundscape, whilst the second will and apply these skills to a short interview.

Part #1

You are required to plan, research and produce a two to five minute ‘audio soundscape’ or ‘acoustic portrait’ of a geographical place of your choice. This will include a range of self-sourced associated or abstract sounds that help illustrate the space.

Part #2

You are required to submit a three-minute edited interview with a single individual of your choice for presentation on local radio. You must choose someone who you feel has something to say to the Brighton & Hove community.

During the term you will give a presentation on a Radio/Sound practitioner focusing on their area of importance or influence, the PowerPoint/Prezzi file and your notes must be submitted.

You must also submit a typed, 500 word, statement which critically introduces your submitted project work locating it contextually, theoretically and aesthetically.

Going to a sound exhibition

We were able to visit a sound exhibition at the university and it was so interesting to see what sound creators were making and also the teachers at the university who also had a few exhibitions and we really got to see what would be teaching us in the future and how creative they are. My favorite piece was a huge displace of copper wire that when moved created loads of different sounds depending on what you touched, it was so captivating and different to what I have seen before.

Contact Microphones

In the session today we experimented with many different types of microphones to test out what sounds we could create and investigate what objects project sound that the human ear may not detected. The first microphone was the Hydrophone; a waterproof microphone. This was a very different shaped microphone with an interesting shape like a miniature flying pan in a sense. Me and my partner first went to the water bottle filling station where we lightly dripped the water on to the head of the microphone, whilst also picking up the sound of the bubbles protruding from the water tank above. This created a real strange combination of sounds and really gave the water its own sound world. The second microphone was a Clip Microphone. Me and my partner were not able to work with this microphone specifically but in the class it was presented that that its just a small mic that can 'clip' to many places and pick up the sounds of the world around it. This could be interpreted as being clipped onto a tree of such and collect all the sounds the appear in the woods like birds a wind through the leaves etc. Lastly was a Contact Microphone with a suction cup that is used for picking up electrical currents. Placing this on a plug socket or a mobile phone created this high pitch buzzing and screeching noise that shows the power and the electricity powering through the devise's. The sound was so interesting cause it was impossible to hear naturally and really gives you an insight into how there is so much sound happening around us all the time.

Editing Interview

After recording the interviews around the campus and getting real incites from some of the students it was time to start editing in Audition. Due to the task lasting exactly 90 seconds it was a very tight editing timing and being specific on what we wanted to present in the final product. This became a bit of a challenge because it was difficult to cut the whole speeches that the interviewees recorded for us.

Outro and Intro Interview

Today we had a task to complete a 90 second voice package with an outro and intro good enough to be able to be presented on radio. We could pick whatever topic we liked for the interview and was sent out into Sussex university. We decided on talking about the Trump and Hilary debate due to the world wide coverage as its the biggest issue in the news right now. We talked to 3 girls on campus and got there opinions. Then we had to go straight to the recording studio to record the intro and outros which was really interesting with the prober soundproof both. Finally we came back to edit it but we didn't finish it so will be doing this next week.

Copy right

I received an email from sound cloud implying that I had 'copy right' a piece of sound from a certain artist. Although I had used all my sounds from the BBC sounds it still appeared. It was a good learning curve though as it showed me how easy it is to copy right as so many sounds and things sound the same and can be similar. I do like how sound cloud is aware of these issues and how they approach if something is wrong.

Lanes Sound Walk (clip)

The Lanes Soundwalk

For this week we did some practice with the sounds equipment and developed our skills with audition too. Our main task was to go to Brighton and create a soundscape of a certain part. Me and my pair Elliot headed to the lanes cause we thought that we could achieve a good atmosphere of sounds and get a vibe of the difference and livelihood of the area. We used Zoom microphone to film and walked silently through the lanes to pick up the surrounding noises. I love the busker that we picked and the noises of the cars and everything else. Then finally we had to interview some people on what they liked most about Brighton. The teenage girls I talked to were quite giggly but I believe it added to my piece to show the student life that completes Brighton.

Soundscape of Sussex

Filming students around sussex

In todays seminar we were sent out into the world of Sussex University to interview fellow students and letting us get use to the bullet microphone and trying to improve our interviewing skills. Me and my partner Lux nervously interviewed some students around Sussex asking them questions about the accommodation and how they have found their first few weeks of seminars and lectures. We spoke to a young girls who was not ecstatic about her living space and also and older gentleman who was wishing to become a teacher and has become a student again. We also just walked around Sussex collecting the ambient sound and the atmosphere in Sussex to add to the interviews we did.

Seaside Atmosphere

For our first 'homework' task I had to devise a short clip of a soundscape of a place using 10 sounds found on the BBC sound SFX library using Adobe Audition. I first looked into what sounds were available and what ideas I could project using the sounds. Due to living in Brighton one of the first ideas that came to my head was the seaside and there were many sounds that correlated with this so I began editing it together. I used sounds of waves, children laughing, boat horns etc. For my first piece I was quite proud of it and it was really fun to use Audition for the first time and start learning the software.

Walking through the woods

On my first seminar in the 'sound 'module we were introduced to the course. I had never had any teaching in sound before so this was a real new experience for me and I was really excited to see what we would be learning and the new skills I would develop. We began by looking at the module guide and getting the approach we will be taking for the next 12 weeks. Also getting to know my tutor and class mates was a great exercise, we had top go around and ask everyone questions learning names and what interests them. My favorite part of the day was using the equipment; the maranze. We were sent out in pairs to record the sound of the woods by wearing the sound recorder and closing our eyes whilst being lead by the other. It was so strange and surreal, it felt like I was listening to someone walking through the woods not that it was myself. The microphone picked up so many minimal sounds that I would not have picked up myself; the flap of bird wings, certain flushes or wind and small twigs snapping. It was a great experience for our first time using any equipment and I'm very excited for the future.
